WSN Policy Worker Siobhán Harding spoke at the second ever Women’s Parliament event held in Stormont in February 2025 about Consortium research on women and unpaid care. Siobhán highlighted the research work carried out in partnership with Carers NI which showed that many women have given up work to care, decreased their working hours due to a caring role or have taken on a less qualified job or turned down a promotion to fit around their caring responsibilities.
An unpaid carer, Natasha McClelland also spoke at the Women’s Parliament event with Siobhán to describe her own personal experience caring for her two adult children with additional needs and working full time. Both Natasha and Siobhán called for an urgent need to recognise and value the huge contribution that unpaid carers make to our society.
