Women holding a banner saying "apprenticeships".

We’re thrilled to announce that WOMEN’STEC has been awarded a grant from the Department for the Economy’s Apprenticeship Inclusion Challenge Fund for our Pathways Plus project. This initiative is all about breaking down barriers and boosting support for women in construction and  construction-related apprenticeships across Derry~Londonderry, Newry, and Belfast.

Construction is a traditionally male-dominated industry, particularly in the trades, where approximately 1% of the workforce are female. This imbalance is not because girls aren’t capable—it’s due to long-standing stereotypes and barriers. These barriers discourage girls from considering careers in construction and when girls do go down this career path, they can find it difficult to stay.

Many countries including Northern Ireland are facing a shortage of skilled workers in construction. Encouraging more girls into the field and supporting them to stay, helps widen the talent pool and ensures the industry has enough skilled professionals for the future.

When girls see women succeeding in construction careers—whether as engineers, electricians, architects, or site managers—it inspires them to imagine those paths for themselves. More representation builds momentum and helps shift the culture of the industry.

The #NotJustForBoy Pathways+ programme is an 18 month pilot programme that aims to support girls currently in traineeships and apprenticeships in construction related subjects to succeed in their journey as well as encouraging school girls to consider construction careers in the future.

Through strategic partnerships with CIOB, NIHE, Construction Futures, South Eastern Regional College and North West Regional College, Pathways Plus will offer tailored mentoring, soft skills training, and real-world opportunities to help women start and thrive in apprenticeships.

With the support of our incredible #NotJustForBoys Champions, we’re making real moves towards a more inclusive construction sector.
